Invasive, made in collaboration with Aaron McIntosh, 2014, archival inkjet print, 39" x 31"
In Strange Terrain, artist Aaron McIntosh and I fabricated a queer world in the form of textile artworks. Thematically the pieces consider man’s complex relationship with nature, obscured histories, and the multilayered implications of material culture. Like the duality found throughout so much of the work, its title references thematic links between wilderness and gay culture as well as our first journey into collaborative territory.
As there was considerable overlap within our areas of artistic inquiry, so Aaron and I decided to collaboratively create two new pieces: The Stake and The Archers & The Quarry. Individually we brought out own personal voice to these jointly-made works. Aaron’s sculptures specifically address Southern textile traditions and the material dialects of desire. My tapestries, on the other hand, examine the role of allegory and metaphor in visual culture.
